AEJ joins call for effective rules in new European Media Freedom Act

The European Commission has adopted the European Media Freedom Act aimed at protecting media pluralism and independence in the EU.

The AEJ has joined 18 other media freedom and human rights groups on September 16 in welcoming the initiative but warns that effective implementation will need clear rules on media ownership, financial transparency, and the independence of regulators in order to counter an alarming pattern of political manipulation and interference in editorial independence and integrity of media outlets around Europe.

The groups’ joint statement notes that media matters have traditionally been in the jurisdiction of member states but current threats posed to media freedom now require EU wide action to protect Europe’s democratic values.
