The 2024 Reuters Institute Digital News Report warns that accurate independent journalism remains more important than ever but news media in many countries face challenges from an increasing matrix of factors including mis- and dis-information, low trust, attacks by politicians, and an uncertain business environment.
Its detailed annual study published on June 17 notes that “there is no single cause for this crisis..that has been building for some time” but the immediate challenges are compounded by the power and changing strategies of rival big tech companies, including social media, search engines, and video platforms, as well as rapid advances in artificial intelligence (AI) that could add further uncertainty to the information landscape.
