Uses and misuses of media law – UK panel marks UN International Day to End Impunity

On 2 November William Horsley, AEJ UK chair and international director of the Centre for Freedom of the Media at the University of Sheffield, marked the UN Day to End Impunity by hosting a panel debate which examined the destructive effects of impunity on the safety and work of journalists worldwide.

The session at the University of Sheffield, titled “The uses and misuses of media law”, featured topical presentations by three leading international law experts – David Banisar, Professor Philip Leach, and Dr Irini Katsirea – who addressed shortcomings in UK national security laws, the importance of the European Court of Human Rights for protecting freedom of expression rights, and “Fighting Disinformation: A new Trojan Horse?”
