News fakers almost face justice

Two key and interlinked characters in the ongoing fake news sagas of recent years faced forms of justice in 2020 – almost.

In the USA, Steve Bannon, former head of right-wing website Breitbart and former Trump chief strategist, was charged with fraud in August 2020. But Trump pardoned him in one of his last acts of office and by early summer 2021 Bannon had a new platform for his views.

In the UK, Alexander Nix, the former head of Cambridge Analytica, was banned from running any limited liability company for seven years. The company – in which Steve Bannon was a major investor  – was accused of misusing personal data from Facebook in both the 2016 U.S. election and the same year’s UK Brexit referendum.
