Marking World Press Freedom Day, the Commonwealth Journalists Association (CJA) hosted an online seminar on media freedom in the Commonwealth.
Headlined “Why don’t we live up to our promises?”, the CJA examined how well, or how badly, member states live up to their declarations of a respect for free media, and the recognition of its central role in democratic society.
The CJA linked up with Your Commonwealth, a platform for the voices of young people, to look at the state of media freedom with panelists Joyce Wachau from Your Commonwealth and CJA representatives Jayanta Roy Chowdhury (India) and William Horsley (UK) on 2 May 2026.
AEJ UK chair Horsley has also published practical proposals for decisive actions by the Commonwealth to defend the fourth estate – How can Parliaments ensure that media freedoms are upheld? in The Parliamentarian, the journal of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association.
